The original Playstation was released in December 1994. It was the first in a series of consoles and paved the way for handheld gaming devices.
The follow-up to the Playstation, the PSone was released in June 2000. It was a smaller, re-designed version of the original console. By 2003, the Playstation and PSone had sold a combined total of 102 million units before eventually becoming the first console to sell 120 million units.
The Playstation 2 was released at the same time as the PSone, a year before it’s competitor Xbox. It was backwards compatible with most original Playstation games. It was built with a slimmer design, before an even slimmer one, the Playstation 2 Slimline was released in 2004. It was reported in 2013 that Playstation 2 was no longer produced, but surveys showed that many people still owned one of the classic console.
The Playstation 3 was released in 2006, competing with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. It was the first console in the series to introduce a wireless controller as well as incorporating a Blu Ray disc player. Capacity for the console eventually increased to 500GB and it sold over 80 million units as of 2013.
The Ps4 was announced at a press conference in February 2013. Among the new features was the Playstation App, which allowed PS4 users to turn smartphone and tablet devices into a ‘second screen.’ Sony also incorporated a share button on the controller, making it possible to view in game content which was being streamed live from friends.
Also included in the Playstation series were the Playstation Portable (PSP) and the Playstation Vita, the latter being released in 2014.
Playstation Network is an online service which focuses on online multiplayer games and digital media. It is used on the Playstation 3, PSP, Ps Vita and the PS4. The service has 110 million users worldwide as of 2013 and provides other features for users such as Playstation Home, which allows users to create a custom avatar, Playstation Store where they can purchase games and films and lastly, trophies which are in-game rewards presented to users for reaching certain milestones or hitting a specific target.
