Development and Consoles
The first Xbox console was officially announced in 2000 at the Game Developers Conference. At the time, the audience were impressed with the technology and it was officially unveiled a year later in Las Vegas by Bill Gates and special guest The Rock. In May that year, games and prices were revealed at another conference- among the first games to be announced were Halo: Combat Evolved and Dead or Alive 3. By 2002, the Xbox was the second most popular console in North America and the Xbox Live service was announced, giving the console an early ‘leg up’ on the ladder of online gaming.
In 2005, the Xbox’s successor, the Xbox 360 was unveiled on MTV. It was released later that year. As a result, the Xbox was discontinued and support for Xbox Live on that console ended in 2010.
The earliest versions of the Xbox 360 suffered a high failure rate, known in gaming circles as the ‘red ring of death’. As a result, Microsoft released two amended versions of the consoles, in 2010 and 2013 respectively. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox consoles have been sold around the world. The console launched with 14 games in North America and 13 in Europe. The best selling game for 2005 was Call of Duty 2, selling over a million copies. Other popular games that year included Saints Row, Dead or Alive 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Gears of War, with the latter becoming the best selling game on the console until it was surpassed by Halo 3 in 2007.
In 2013, the successor to the Xbox 360 was announced- the Xbox One. It was released across North America and several parts of Europe later that year. It is also the first Xbox console to be released in China. Microsoft, alongside various magazines, have classed the console as an ‘all in one entertainment device’, in competition with the likes of the Apple TV. Games for the console are distributed on Blu-Ray discs but are also available through the Xbox Games store. One prominent feature is that users can play a portion of the game, such as an opening sequence, whilst the rest downloads. Some of the games that came with the console as a bundle at the time of launch included: Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5 and Zoo Tycoon. Other games continued to be bundled with the console throughout 2014, such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In 2015, another bundle was released which included a coupon for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
